Artist Research - Lotte Reiniger

Image
Charlotte "Lotte" Reiniger, born 2nd June 1899, was a German animator and pioneer of silhoutte animation, a style born from her fascination with Chinese paper cutting at a young age. Reiniger took great inspiration from the works of Georges Méliés and Paul Wegener to the point where she would attend a lecture by Wegener at the age of 16 and enrolled in the former acting group of Wegener, working backstage on props and costume, eventually leading her to returning to sillouettes as she made portraits of the actors in her spare time. Unlike most art of the 1920s, which used expression to portray emotion, Reiniger took her silhouette style to heart, creating characters that used intricate movements to express themselves. One of Reiniger's most famous works and one of the oldest surviving full-length animated films, The Adventures of Prince Achmed  (1926), displays one of the defining traits of her work, her tenency to work on fairy tale adapations. From her first film ...

Thumbnails - Wednesday 26th September

Oops, it's been a while since I've actually posted anything. In my defence I was ill, but that's not really an excuse. At any rate, here are another load of thumbnails I've finished, along with more of my city notes. Leonia Moriana Phyllis Page 1 Sophronia Tamara Thekla Zenobia

Work Journal - Tuesday 18th September

Just a sample of my city notes. This one is for Thekla, I'll upload more as I make them. Today we were given a briefing on how the Context project will go, including infomation on how it relates to our Film Reviews. Last year I really wasn't feeling it but I'm really looking forward to the Context project this time, I think the group oriented structure and the way it leans heavily into building our research skills will help me a lot. My gang's research focus is on Film Noir, or at least The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in relation to Film Noir. I picked up a few books out of the library to read tonight and tomorrow (Film Noir by William Luhr and Film Noir by Alain Silver and James Ursini.) in preparation for Thursday. Anyway, here's the thumbnails I've got so far. It's a mix of a few cities, these were the ones I did before I started making more detailed notes (see right) so they're only based of surface level ideas. I'll upload more as I fi...

[2017, OLD] Contextual Studies - Thursday 21st September

Today was our first time in 'Contextual Studies' which was fine, until talk of the essay came up. Now yes, it is formulative and yes, it's only 1000 words, which really isn't that much but if there is anything I truly despise it's writing. Of any kind (Which is the main reason I still haven't finished my film review for this week). The session as a whole was fine, it genuinely helped me think up few ideas I might touch upon when doing the rest of my thumbnails and I'm interested to see what we look at next week. It's just I'm really not good at writing. Now, yes, I understand I'm literally typing a diary out right now but it's not the same, I just can't write and think at the same time, all I'm doing right now is ranting out loud and dictating my rants. That's why last year I stuck to recordings for my journal. But I'll do it anyway. I mean, I literally did this exact same essay (just a thousand words shorter) last year fo...
